Glowchestra

This interactive music experience consists of three virtual instruments everyone can easily play with. Additionally, Glowchestra features a loop station that allows to record sound sequences and thereby create a whole song.

Implementation

In the university course on VR we wanted to create an interactive and pleasant application. Our goals included creating the feeling of being inside of a music instrument and being part of it. We wanted to achieve this via simple and abstract visuals. We also added the functionality of a looper which lets you record sounds and play more dynamically.

  • Input: Oculus Controller input
  • Output: generated audio, visual feedback on the instruments

Instruments

There are three different instruments in the scene, each representing one of the three core elements of music:

  • Melody (Xylo, devided into bass and treble)
  • Rhythm (Drums)
  • Harmony (Pillars)

While the first two instruments just play a single note when hit, the Pillars instrument plays a sustained triad for as long as the player holds his hand over one of the tone generators.

The sound and the amount of notes of the instruments were carefully chosen to allow a good amount of musical expression while at the same time being simple enough to not overwhelm the user.
